Tax Treatment of Health InsuranceThe federal government has a rather long history of involvement in the purchase of health insurance, and through current tax policy has incentivized more than two-thirds of the U.S. population (160 million lives) to be covered by quality private health insurance through the employer setting. For more than 60 years, employer-sponsored insurance (ESI) has helped to effectively pool health insurance risks for individuals over time and across groups, with remarkably little government interference. NAHU strongly agrees that the Tax Code can and should be used to encourage as many people as possible to be covered by health insurance. And we believe that policymakers should look to build upon the successes that our health care delivery system has achieved to date.
